In many cases, the local chapter meetings are held at universities nationally and internationally. This distinction recognizes their unique research contributions and communication skills in presenting their work to audiences with a broad range of backgrounds.

Both faculty are members of the Signal and Image Processing Institute (SIPI) within the Department. Shri Narayanan's research focuses on signals and systems modeling with an interdisciplinary emphasis on speech, audio, language, multimodal and biomedical signal processing and applications. Antonio Ortega's work is concerned with digital image and video compression and communications.

Signal and Image Processing Institute (SIPI) Director Jay Kuo commented: "It is a great honor that SIPI and the Ming Hsieh EE Department have two SPS Distinguished Lecturers during the same period." Ming Hsieh EE Systems Chair Alexander A. (Sandy) Sawchuk said: "Ming Hsieh EE faculty join me in congratulating Shri and Antonio on their selection as IEEE SPS Distinguished Lecturers and its recognition of their technical excellence by their peers."
