Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering faculty member Robert Scholtz has been awarded the 2012 Best Paper Award by the IEEE Signal Processing Society. The award will be presented to Professor Scholtz and his coauthors USC alumnus Dr. Robert Wilson and Prof. David Tse of UC Berkeley, at the ICASSP 2013 Opening Ceremony in Vancouver, Canada.
The award is given for the paper, “Channel Identification: Secret Sharing Using Reciprocity in Ultrawideband Channels,” appearing in the IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security. This particular paper uses common information extracted by ultrawideband transceivers about their common communication channel to develop a secret key for secure communications. This technique bypasses the need for key distribution in many wireless networks.
Sandeep Gupta, Systems Chair of the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering, commented: "we congratulate Bob Scholtz for receiving the SPS 2012 Best Paper Award and its recognition of his contributions to ultrawideband communications security."
