Dr. Preston Marshall was recently appointed as Research Professor in the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering. He joined the USC Information Sciences Institute (ISI) in 2009, and is Director, Decision Systems. His career has included several appointments in the aerospace and defense industry, and has involved communications, networking, wireless, and control systems.
Most recently, he was a program manager at DARPA (2002-2009) in the Strategic Technology Office (STO) where he developed and supported many programs that dynamically adapt radio spectrum use for more efficient communications and networking. These programs are often called cognitive radio or software-defined radio, and he is known for his contributions and leadership in these fields and related topics. He has written a book, a number of book chapters and many journal and conference papers on these and related topics. Dr. Marshall has also been developing active collaborations in cognitive radio and wireless networking with faculty in our department, including Giuseppe Caire and others in communications. He would like to expand his research collaborations and work with EE faculty and students on new projects.
Alexander (Sandy) Sawchuk, Chair of the Ming Hsieh EE-Systems Department, said: "Our department joins me in welcoming Preston Marshall to our faculty. We look forward to working with him on future research in communications and networking."
